What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese practice developed by Mikao Usui in the early twentieth century. The name is usually translated as "universal life energy". In a session, the practitioner places their hands lightly on, or just above, different parts of your body in a set sequence while you lie still and relax.
Reiki is not a religion, and you do not need to hold any particular beliefs to receive it. You do not have to do anything during the session except get comfortable and let yourself rest.
Usui and Karuna Reiki
Usui Reiki is the original system, and the one most people have heard of. Karuna Reiki is a later approach that builds on Usui training. Sonya Hudson is qualified as both a Reiki Master and a Karuna Reiki Master, and she is a member of the UK Reiki Federation. On your first call, she can explain how she would approach your session and answer any questions about the two.
What happens in a Reiki session?
Each session starts with a short conversation about how you are feeling and what you would like from the time. You then lie on a comfortable treatment couch, fully clothed, with a blanket over you if you wish. Soft, relaxing music usually plays in the background.
Once you have settled and closed your eyes, Sonya works through a series of hand positions, usually starting around the head and moving down the body. Her hands rest lightly on you or stay just above you. If you would prefer no touch at all, just say so and the whole session can be done with her hands slightly away from your body.
At the end, you are gently brought back to full alertness and given a glass of water. There is time to sit quietly, talk about how it felt and ask any questions before you head home.

How does Reiki feel?
Experiences vary. Many people say they feel deeply relaxed, and some drift into a light sleep. Others notice warmth or tingling where the hands are placed, or simply feel calm and quiet. Some people do not notice anything in particular, and that is fine too. There is no right or wrong way to experience a session.
Why do people choose Reiki?
Most people come to Reiki because they want to relax and switch off. It can be a welcome break if life feels busy or stressful, or if you simply want an hour of calm in a quiet room. Some people combine it with other approaches offered here, such as hypnotherapy or EFT, while others prefer Reiki on its own because it needs no talking or effort.
People sometimes have Reiki while they are also receiving medical treatment, for comfort and relaxation. If that applies to you, please keep following your doctor's advice and let them know you are having complementary therapy.
What does the evidence say about Reiki?
It is important to be clear. There is no good scientific evidence that Reiki works by channelling energy, or that it can treat or cure any medical condition. Research studies have generally been small, and where people report benefits, these are often linked to relaxation and the calm, caring setting.
Reiki is offered here as a gentle, complementary way to rest and unwind. It is not a substitute for medical diagnosis, treatment or advice.
Looking after your health. If you have symptoms that have not been checked by a doctor, please see your GP. Reiki can sit alongside medical care, but it should never replace it.
Where do Reiki sessions take place?
Reiki sessions take place in person at the clinic at Hadrian Lodge West in Wallsend, a short journey from Newcastle city centre and easy to reach from across North Tyneside. The room is quiet and private, with a comfortable couch, so you can relax fully.
