What is hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a talking therapy that uses hypnosis as part of the process. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and deep relaxation. Most of us drift into something similar every day, for example when we are absorbed in a book or lost in thought on a familiar journey.
In this relaxed state, many people find it easier to step back from their usual thinking. That makes it a useful setting for noticing what drives a reaction, picturing how you would like to respond instead and taking on helpful suggestions.
How does hypnotherapy work?
Many of our reactions happen automatically. A racing heart before a presentation, reaching for a cigarette after a meal or lying awake going over the day are all learned patterns. Knowing they are unhelpful is often not enough to change them.
Hypnotherapy works with these patterns while you are calm and focused. Your hypnotherapist may use positive suggestion, guided imagery or rehearsal of a difficult situation, so that a new response starts to feel more familiar. You stay awake and aware throughout, and you take an active part in the work.
What can hypnotherapy help with?
People usually look into hypnotherapy when something has started to feel stuck: a worry that keeps looping, a habit that will not shift or a fear that seems out of proportion. At Hypnotherapy Newcastle, it is often used to help with:
- anxiety, worry and panic
- stress, tension and feeling overwhelmed
- confidence and self-esteem, including public speaking, exams and driving tests
- phobias and fears, such as fear of flying
- sleep problems and trouble switching off at night
- stopping smoking and other habits, such as nail biting
- anger, grief and loss, and other difficult emotions
Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy. It is not a replacement for medical care, and people respond in different ways. What it offers is a structured, supportive space to work towards change at your own pace.
What happens in a hypnotherapy session?
Your first session starts with a conversation. You will talk about what has been happening, how it affects your daily life and what you would like to be different. This helps you agree clear, realistic goals, so the rest of the session is focused on what matters to you.
When you are ready, you will be guided into a relaxed state, usually sitting in a comfortable chair with your eyes closed. The therapy itself might include suggestion, visualisation, looking at a situation from a calmer point of view or rehearsing a new way of responding. Afterwards you are gently brought back to full alertness, and there is time to talk about how it felt.
Sessions usually last between 60 and 90 minutes. You can come to the clinic in Wallsend or have your sessions online.

Is hypnotherapy safe?
For most adults, hypnotherapy with a trained practitioner is a gentle and safe experience. You cannot be made to do anything against your wishes, and you can open your eyes or stop at any time. It is not suitable for everyone, though. If you have certain mental health conditions, such as psychosis, or symptoms that have not been checked by a doctor, this will be discussed with you first and you may be advised to speak to your GP.
A tailored approach, not a set script
Every session at Hypnotherapy Newcastle is with Sonya Hudson, a clinical hypnotherapist with more than 20 years' experience. Her training covers several hypnotherapy traditions, including Ericksonian and analytical approaches. Some people respond well to direct suggestion, while others prefer a gentler, more exploratory style, so the method is chosen to suit you. Where it helps, hypnotherapy can also be combined with NLP or EFT.
Finding a hypnotherapist in Newcastle you can trust
Hypnotherapist is not a protected title in the UK, so it is worth checking training and registration before you book. Sonya holds a Diploma in Clinical and Analytical Hypnotherapy and is registered with the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council. You can expect:
- an honest conversation about whether hypnotherapy is likely to suit you
- clear explanations at every stage, with time for your questions
- a calm, private and confidential setting
- no pressure to book further sessions
Looking after your health. If you have symptoms that have not been assessed by a doctor, or you are being treated for a mental health condition, please tell us and keep following your GP's advice.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose control or be made to do something?
No. Therapeutic hypnosis is a cooperative process. You stay aware, you can hear everything and you will not say or do anything you do not want to.
Can everyone be hypnotised?
Most people can experience hypnosis to some degree. It usually comes more easily when you feel comfortable, understand what is happening and want to take part.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on you and what you are working on. Some people come for a small number of sessions, while others prefer a longer piece of work. This is talked about openly, and you are never tied in.
How long is a hypnotherapy session?
Sessions usually last between 60 and 90 minutes. This includes time to talk before and after the hypnosis itself.
Do you offer online hypnotherapy?
Yes. Sessions are available online as well as at the clinic in Wallsend. Many people find it just as relaxing to work from home.
How much does hypnotherapy cost in Newcastle?
Fees depend on the type and length of session. Please get in touch for current prices. They will be explained clearly during your free first call, before you commit to anything.
