Why confidence can feel out of reach

Low confidence is rarely about a lack of ability. More often it comes from the way we talk to ourselves: a harsh inner critic, a memory of a time things went wrong, or a habit of expecting the worst. Over time these thoughts can lead us to avoid the situations that make us nervous, and avoiding them makes them feel even harder the next time.

The good news is that confidence is not a fixed trait. Like most things, it grows with practice, and hypnotherapy gives you a safe place to do that practice. Small successes build on each other, and each one makes the next step feel a little easier.

What confidence issues can hypnotherapy help with?

People come to Hypnotherapy Newcastle for many kinds of confidence-related goals, including:

  • general self-confidence and self-esteem
  • public speaking and presentations
  • stage fright and performance nerves
  • exam nerves and driving test nerves
  • sports and academic performance
  • interviews, promotions and starting a new job

How hypnotherapy and NLP work together

Confidence work often combines hypnotherapy with NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). In hypnosis, you can rehearse a situation in your imagination while feeling calm and capable. You might picture walking into the exam hall, standing up to speak or starting the car for your driving test. Going over it in this relaxed way helps the real event feel more familiar and less threatening.

NLP adds practical tools. You might learn to notice and reframe self-critical thoughts, or create what is called an anchor. This is a simple cue, such as pressing your thumb and finger together, that you link with a confident feeling so you can call on it when you need it.

Exam nerves and driving test nerves

Exams and driving tests are two of the most common reasons people get in touch. In both cases, nerves can get in the way of skills you already have. You may know the material or be able to drive perfectly well with your instructor, yet freeze when it really counts. Sessions focus on helping you stay calm and focused on the day, so you can show what you are capable of. If you have a date coming up, it is worth getting in touch early so there is time to practise.

Building self-esteem over time

Preparing for one important event is different from building self-esteem more broadly. If you have felt unsure of yourself for a long time, sessions may look more gently at where those beliefs came from and how to replace them with a kinder, more realistic view of yourself. Your plan is agreed with you from the start, so you always know what you are working towards.

What does a confidence session look like?

Each session starts with a short conversation about what has happened since you last met and what you would like to focus on. You will then spend time in hypnosis, rehearsing the situations that matter to you, followed by practical NLP exercises you can take away. Many people find it helpful to keep a short note of moments when they felt more confident during the week. Over time these notes become proof that things are changing.

Confidence support with Sonya Hudson

Sessions are led by Sonya Hudson, a clinical hypnotherapist and NLP master practitioner with more than 20 years of experience. Sonya has also spent many years training and presenting to groups, so she understands how nerves can feel before you stand up in front of people. Sessions last around 60 to 90 minutes, at the clinic in Wallsend or online.

A balanced view. Hypnotherapy can support you in building confidence, but everyone responds differently and change usually comes with practice. If low confidence is linked to ongoing low mood, please talk to your GP too.

Questions

Questions about confidence and nerves

I have an exam or driving test soon. Is there still time?

Get in touch as early as you can. During your free call you can talk through your timescale and what might be realistic before the day.

Can children or teenagers have sessions for exam nerves?

Please get in touch to discuss this. Sessions for younger people are arranged with a parent or guardian, and the details are explained during the initial call.

What is an NLP anchor?

An anchor is a simple cue, such as a gesture or a word, that you link with a calm or confident feeling. With practice, it can help you recall that feeling more easily when you need it.

Can hypnotherapy help with fear of public speaking?

Public speaking is one of the most common confidence goals. Sessions usually combine relaxation, rehearsing the talk in your imagination and practical NLP techniques for managing nerves on the day.

Can hypnotherapy help with shyness?

Many shy people come to sessions wanting to feel more at ease when meeting people or joining in conversations. The aim is not to turn you into someone else, but to reduce the nerves that hold you back.

Can I have confidence sessions online?

Yes. Online sessions work well for confidence and performance nerves, and they can be easier to fit around work or study.

Can hypnotherapy help with interview nerves?

Yes. Sessions can help you rehearse the interview calmly in your mind and use simple techniques to settle your nerves on the day, so you can focus on answering well.

Will I become overconfident or act out of character?

No. Hypnotherapy does not change your personality. The aim is to help you feel more like yourself in situations where nerves usually take over.
